Autumn Decree

"I want to go home. I want to go home to her."

Every day after work, the first thing Fang Yiran did when she got home was pick up Qiuling and sit with her on the sofa.

She had to cuddle with the cat for a long time before she had the strength to cook.

The kitten Qiuling had been left behind by Fang Yiran's baby.

Qiuling had kept her company for so, so long.

She had lost count of how many days and nights they had spent together.

When autumn came, Qiuling grew clingy and sometimes stopped eating.

Fang Yiran thought Qiuling had gone outside and been bullied by another kitten, so she comforted her, promising to make things right after work the next day.

The next day, Fang Yiran hurried home at lunchtime to keep Qiuling company.

When she opened the door, Qiuling didn't run up to greet her as usual.

Fang Yiran went inside, calling the kitten's name as she searched.

She looked everywhere: the living room, the kitchen, the bathroom.

Then she opened the bedroom door.

Qiuling was lying there quietly. No matter how much Fang Yiran called, she wouldn't wake up.

Just like her owner, she had left.

Fang Yiran buried the kitten beneath a maple tree.

Qiuling had been the only keepsake left behind by her beloved baby.

Now that keepsake had left with autumn.

Fang Yiran had nothing left.

The next day, she still went to work as usual.

She began to live as she always had: going to work, coming home, and picking up her cat.

The sound of the fingerprint lock rang out.

Fang Yiran walked in with a smile and called, "Qiuling."

The kitten never answered her again...
