Long, Snowy Night

Slightly bittersweet / mutual redemption / school years to city life / HE

1.

Ye Baichi never thought of himself as a good person.

Going from a rich young master who spent money lavishly to hitting rock bottom, becoming a good person was cruel to him.

The poor couldn't afford compassion. He could barely take care of himself.

That was until he met Zhuo Tingxue, a girl in the same dire straits.

Like him, she lived in an urban village and ate the cheapest meals. To save on bus fare, she walked to and from school, no matter how bad the weather was.

He ladled her a spoonful of egg soup and walked with her through a dark alley, and she called him a good person.

2.

When bitter winter arrived, one cold and the other hungry, they had no choice but to form a makeshift family and huddle together for warmth.

The snow melted, and spring brought warmth and flowers.

Ye Baichi asked Zhuo Tingxue which university she wanted to attend, and whether she wanted to take her grandmother and leave this place.

She didn't answer. Instead, she asked him the same question.

Just when she thought he wouldn't answer, he said, "I hate this city. The farther away I can go for college, the better."

She clenched her fist and smiled brightly. "A good person deserves to get what he wishes for."

They were destined to sail toward different horizons in life. Parting was inevitable.
