The "Mad" Woman Who Came Down from the Attic

Bertha Mason, literature's most famous "madwoman," "died" in the flames of Jane Eyre.

But the real story begins in the ashes.

Locked in Thornfield's attic for fifteen years, they took her name, her fortune, and her sanity.

When she returns to her homeland of Jamaica, her family sees her as a shameful ghost and is eager to bury her all over again.

The whole Caribbean whispers: Where can a woman with no one to rely on go?

Bertha Mason laughs.

She wants no pity, no salvation, and she refuses to become a footnote in anyone else's story.
