I Was Reincarnated as a Little Mushroom

(Check out my other works: Apocalypse Survival: The Little Mushroom Who Picks Up Trash and Rococo's Magic Tailor Shop)

The apocalypse arrives.

A mushroom sprouts between the gray sky and the soil.

Gu Xia has been reincarnated as a little mushroom.

*

It's raining.

A rabbit races through the barren brambles. The rain acidifies the air, discolors the soil, and dissolves stone.

The poor rabbit spots a plump, upright mushroom and hops beneath its cap to shelter from the rain, clutching its ears.

The rain stops, and the rabbit is saved. Before leaving, it eats half the mushroom's cap.

Gu Xia has been reincarnated as a little mushroom, with no hands, feet, or eyes. He wakes up missing half his head.

And he's a poisonous mushroom, too.

The greedy rabbit collapses beside him, twitching. Its fur gradually turns cold, and the stench of decay begins to rise from it.

The pungent, sour smell is irresistible to Gu Xia, a mushroom that feeds on the dead.

He licks his nonexistent lips, and snow-white mycelium envelops the dead rabbit.

"Apocalypse rabbit tastes like fruitwood-roasted duck."

With his stomach full, he unexpectedly gains the rabbit's exceptional hearing.

Gu Xia can hear the rain, the sunrise and sunset, and the arrival of death.

The next day,

His snow-white mycelium feels around in every direction. What luck! Gu Xia finds a little bowl of cassava dessert soup, thick and gooey, soft and chewy, sweet and springy.

After a hearty meal, he gains a snail's very, very poor eyesight.

Gu Xia squints with his newly sighted, severely nearsighted eyes, and a question rises from the depths of his soul:

"Did I just eat that big, colorful-shelled snail?"

He wants to throw up, but he has no mouth.

After several days of fasting, the little mushroom starts looking for food again.

This time, he finds a huge wild boar.

Gu Xia shifts his mycelium and stares at the boar through his eight-hundred-degree nearsighted vision for a long while.

Oh no, that's actually a person!

He's covered in blood and badly injured.

"He's not dead yet, so I can't eat him. I'll come back tomorrow and check."

Gu Xia works hard at eating every day, and finally grows from a little mushroom into a big one. He grows a complete set of facial features and unexpectedly acquires a human body.

A pretty, well-behaved young man walks out of the forest and enters a human city being rebuilt after the apocalypse.

His new life hasn't even begun when he's surrounded by a group of people.

Gu Xia: "Listen to me." I didn't eat your colonel.

I just... Gu Xia feels guilty. He was so hungry at the time that he gave him a couple of little licks.

He Jian often thinks back to the time when his injuries were at their worst.

Through his hazy consciousness, he saw a little monster resembling a mushroom inching closer and closer.

The little mushroom was round and soft, smooth and supple. Its tender, firm touch kept enveloping He Jian, and then...

It licked him until he was sticky all over.

*

A little scene:

He Jian is curious: "Sweetheart, what was your first impression of me?"

The mushroom answers honestly: "That huge wild boar... I mean, that person looked delicious and really nutritious."

He Jian: "..."

He carries Gu Xia to bed. "You're delicious too, sweetheart."
