In Totto Land, it's tradition to kick husbands out after the children are born. Cracker can't stand men who refuse to leave, like a certain three-eyed man, who brought along a disabled child from his tribe and just won't go, no matter how many times he's told to.
Cracker dislikes the three-eyed man, and he likes the disabled child, who has nothing but a pretty face, even less. He throws the child into a terrifying forest, only to accidentally discover the child's secret.
The child sings beautifully, and even the terrifying creatures in the forest are enchanted. Since the singing is so good, Cracker decides he'll protect the child from now on.
"From now on, you can only sing for me."
Cracker makes time every day to visit the forest and listen to the child sing. Gradually, he discovers that the child is just like him: afraid of pain and needles. Tsk, he has no choice but to protect the kid.
He'll become a mighty Sweet Commander like his brother Katakuri, grow up as soon as possible, and marry the child off to his own island.
.
Because she was born with three eyes, Pudding was rejected by her own mother. Ever since birth, her siblings have pulled and cut her hair, and covered her eye with tape. After she fell into the water and was rescued, Pudding discovered that her biological father was still alive.
Her father and cousin were still in Totto Land, and they hadn't abandoned her. Pudding found a family of her own. Whenever she was ostracized or bullied, her father and cousin helped her heal.
"I'm happy to stay here."
Once you take the Charlotte name, there's no leaving unless you die. Pudding turned down an escape plan that was doomed to fail. She didn't want one offhand complaint about being unhappy in Totto Land to get her father and cousin into trouble.
Her cousin's legs were disabled, so Pudding gave her the flying carpet that she'd received as a reward for her first attempt to win her mother's favor. She'd get plenty more rewards in the future.
She'd work hard to become a minister governing her own island, then hide her cousin, who was always bullied by her brothers, in her territory where no one could find her.
.
Becoming Charlotte's finest masterpiece was nothing special. Katakuri thought that his eldest brother Perospero, who worked tirelessly for all of Totto Land, was the truly impressive one. Whenever Mama's Hunger Pangs struck, it was thanks to his brother that things were handled smoothly.
Katakuri knew that Aetis also played a part.
Aetis could foresee the distant future, far beyond the reach of his Observation Haki. His eldest brother and Aetis were close, and he could see without using Observation Haki that one day they would walk down the aisle together.
"You want to hear me tell a story?"
Katakuri didn't understand why Aetis didn't ask his eldest brother Perospero instead. That was the difference between him and Perospero. His brother understood people best, while all he had was strength, and his sister Brulee had been punished by people he'd beaten.
The doctor said the scars on Brulee's face couldn't be repaired. Aetis produced medicine that could remove them. Katakuri didn't know how to thank her, and the gifts he'd prepared never seemed good enough. Maybe Aetis was just as embarrassed as he was. She said she wanted to hear a story, but really she wanted to learn everything she could about his eldest brother.
Maybe he could try speaking up, even if he wasn't good at telling stories.
.
The Mirror-Mirror Fruit wasn't a food-related fruit, and Brulee was often dejected that she couldn't be of any help. She could only watch her brothers and sisters working hard through her mirrors, then make extra desserts for them to show her appreciation.
Her sisters knew how to rest, but her brothers didn't. Through her mirrors, Brulee discovered that they spent their free time visiting the three-eyed little girl's father and cousin, especially the cousin.
Cracker kept trying, without success, to make them leave. Perospero went to thank them for foreseeing Mama's Hunger Pangs. Her second eldest brother Katakuri brought nothing but stories.
"Katakuri must have something going on!"
Her eldest brother was kind to everyone, but her second brother was especially kind to the three-eyed girl's cousin. Brulee understood: this wasn't some cousin. She was her future sister-in-law!
It didn't matter that her second brother didn't know how to express his feelings. Brulee delivered every gift he was too embarrassed to give to his future sister-in-law, and even added a bunch more in his name. Her sister-in-law liked food, so Brulee brought her a huge pile of it every day, especially glutinous rice dishes.
Great! She could help her brother, too!
.
The eldest son should shoulder the responsibility of looking after the whole family. Perospero had no complaints. The strong preyed on the weak at sea, and his younger siblings developed their strength to secure their footing, while he took care of all the tedious tasks that required brains.
Occasionally, he solved problems with force, too.
His younger brother Cracker had failed to drive away the three-eyed man. After offering a few words of comfort, Perospero went to the forest on the border of Totto Land. He was ready to outwit and outfight the three-eyed girl who had made his brother fail. Instead, she grabbed his leg and begged for food.
Influenced by their mother, who loved children, and having spent years caring for his younger siblings, Perospero couldn't resist a child who depended on him.
The strong could develop freely, while the weak needed to be taught according to their abilities. The three-eyed girl named Aetis had trouble walking, but was quick-witted. Perospero took her on as a capable assistant and helped her develop her talents.
Aetis needed the power of the Charlotte family's eldest son, and he didn't reject her extraordinary talents. They used and relied on each other. Without noticing, his training plan turned into a collection of love letters. Perospero had never considered himself rebellious, but when he looked at the now-grown Aetis, he couldn't bear the thought of Mama arranging for him to marry someone else.
"Will you give me a wedding?"
Perospero was always meticulous and thoughtful. He'd arranged Mama's weddings many times, but he never expected to get nervous and say the wrong thing while proposing. Aetis understood him because they were of one mind. He meant that he wanted to give her a wedding. Everything fell into place so naturally, and Aetis not only said yes, she was even more proactive than he was.
But he backed down.
Perospero felt resistance well up inside him. He was afraid that if he died one day, Totto Land, which Aetis could never leave, would become a cage that robbed her of her freedom.
Perospero wondered if proposing had been the right thing to do. Then he felt Aetis's hand clasping his fingers tightly. She told him not to fear death, and to stand by the choice he'd made.
"If I'm here, then you'll be here too."
.
Even if your head fell off, it could be reattached. Aetis had great confidence in her medical skills. When her best friend suffered from pre-wedding anxiety, she told Perospero to lie flat and relax. She'd make sure he got a wedding that passed her best-friend approval test.
One month to arrange the wedding, one month to help manage Totto Land during the honeymoon, and one month for the journey there and back... After working it all out, Aetis told her workplace that she'd start in three months.
As soon as she came of age, Aetis got a job. She couldn't keep eating at Perospero's expense without paying him back. After postponing her start date, she began helping her best friend plan the wedding, from choosing the rings and accessories to picking the wedding clothes and carriage. Aetis was having a wonderful time, until one day she woke up groggily and saw that the bridal makeup she'd chosen the day before had been done on her own face in the mirror. Aetis's eyes widened in shock.
The bride was me?!
The glutinous rice ball in Aetis's hand dropped to the floor with a plop. She'd been eating so much for years without paying a thing. Had Perospero finally had enough of her?
Marriage was a sign that she'd be kicked out. The day she gave birth, she'd be thrown out just like her uncle.
No way. They could hurt each other and waste money, but they couldn't ruin her friendship with Perospero.
Aetis called the Marines' Science Division. The division chief was an easygoing person who agreed that she could start in three months, and even said he'd come pick her up in person on her first day.
"Could I change it to starting immediately?"
Aetis was worried that changing her mind again and again would annoy him, or even make him refuse to hire her. But to her surprise, the voice on the other end agreed.
The Science Division chief was free now and could come pick her up right away. When he asked what color clothes she was wearing, Aetis looked around at the wedding guests who'd come to Whole Cake Island.
"You'll find me easily! I'm the bride!"

A few things to know before reading:
1. The female lead has disabled legs. The reason is explained in the story.
2. The female lead wants to hear Katakuri tell stories. The reason is explained in the story.
3. Katakuri is slow to understand romance, so, just like in Sweet and Salty, this is a sister-in-law romance.
4. Though they're the same person, Joy leans toward mature "wisdom," while Sisi leans toward innocent "instinct." Compared with Joy, who turned into a lazy fish after a certain event, Sisi is an energetic beagle (crossed out), a quiet and adorable rabbit (when focused) (absolutely certain.jpg).
5. More to be added.
