Shen Zhiwei always believed that meeting He Jinye was a gift from fate.
That rainy night, the Omega was soaked through and collapsed outside her door, pale and fragile. Her snow-white skin glimmered coldly in the light, like an expensive porcelain doll left behind. Shen Zhiwei took her in with a tender heart and cared for her devotedly.
He Jinye was sweet and dependent, with eyes only for her.
When the Omega was seized by an inexplicable illness and trembled in agony in her arms, a bewildered sheen of water rippled in her cool eyes. Her whole body seemed to melt into a pool of spring water, and broken whimpers squeezed through her teeth. "Please... please."
Her tearful voice begged for a temporary mark. Shen Zhiwei hesitated.
She was an alpha with a defective gland, unable to truly soothe an omega.
All Shen Zhiwei could offer was a barely adequate temporary mark, along with her own wholehearted love. They shared a sweet, blissful time together, and Shen Zhiwei tried every possible way to find a treatment for He Jinye's illness.
So when He Jinye's family finally came looking for her, Shen Zhiwei was genuinely happy for her. She believed what He Jinye had said: that they were about to have a future together.
Until she heard with her own ears He Jinye say to someone else in a cold tone she'd never heard before, "If a destined mate weren't the only one who could cure my illness, why would I have spent months putting on this act with her? It's ridiculous."
In that moment, Shen Zhiwei's world crumbled into silence.
It turned out that everything, from the rainy night they first met to every dependent embrace, from the agony of her illness to their sweet markings, had been a carefully calculated act.
He Jinye's illness had never been incurable. The cure just happened to be Shen Zhiwei herself.
She silently let go and ended this farce. It was as if she had never known this person.
Later, He Jinye had everything she could want and her illness was stable, yet every night she was tormented by the pain of losing that familiar scent. She finally understood: what she had schemed to obtain wasn't medicine, but a love that carved out her heart and bones.
He Jinye found her former lover again. The once-cool eyes now brimmed with tears, while a nearly crazed obsession burned deep in her pupils.
She buried her head beside He Jinye's neck, her voice trembling faintly.
"Just let me die in your hands. At least then, the last thing I smell... will still be your scent."
