In the second year after the country bumpkin turned into a phoenix and the poor boy ascended to become the real young master,
Li Xian received his first assignment from his superiors, his biological parents: take the fake young master's place in a political marriage.
His marriage partner was an old, lame madman. His Omega younger brother clutched his sleeve, sobbing pitifully. "Brother, I'm so scared."
"You know none of the Alphas are any good!"
On one side stood his biological parents, grim-faced and on high alert.
On the other, his younger brother struggled to squeeze out tears, sobbing so hard he could barely catch his breath.
Li Xian smiled considerately. "I'm a Beta. Let me go."
Unfortunately, the marriage required an Omega, not a Beta.
So Li Xian was sprayed from head to toe with perfume, left, right, and all around, then stuffed into the Zhu family's old manor.
Because of his leg injury, the family head, Zhu Wansheng, rarely showed his face in public. Rumor had it that he was moody, gloomy, and terrifying. The old manor was nearly deserted, with not even a servant in sight.
After wandering around lost for a whole hour, Li Xian finally spotted a man sitting on a bench.
Wow, what a beauty.
Could he be the other man's kept canary?
Well, then they'd be in the same line of work from now on.
With nothing else to do, Li Xian chatted with him about life for half an hour. Although the man stayed silent the whole time, he was kind enough to point Li Xian in the right direction.
What a good person!
Since they were both in the same boat, Li Xian promised he would never compete with the poor canary for his master's affection.
But on the night of their "wedding," Li Xian looked up and saw the man in the wheelchair... the canary himself.
The man gave him a polite, distant nod. "Hello, I'm Zhu Wansheng."
Li Xian: "..."
-
Half a year later, the Zhu family head made his first public appearance at a press conference, stirring up a storm.
His younger brother contacted him in a panic. "Brother! How have things been at the Zhu house?"
Li Xian was a man of few words. "Fine."
His younger brother said, "I never expected him to be so different from the rumors. Everyone's asking about him now. You two aren't really married yet, so let's switch back."
Li Xian replied, "Didn't you say none of the Alphas were any good?"
His younger brother faltered for a moment. "That Zhu Wansheng... He should be a good A, right?"
At that, Li Xian gave a low laugh.
Across from him, Zhu Wansheng had just finished carefully peeling a plate of grapes and pushed it over. The young man picked one up and held it against Zhu Wansheng's rosy lips.
The room was thick with mingled pheromones. The scent that belonged to an Alpha was enveloped by another, far more intense and frenzied one. The man lowered his eyes and opened his lips. As he took the grape, he also took Li Xian's finger into his mouth.
"That's right," Li Xian said, his Adam's apple bobbing. "He's a really good A."
