Mountain Spirit in the Mortal Realm

During the Eastern Jin and Northern and Southern Dynasties, wars raged without end. Buddhism and Daoism had yet to take root, while shamans and ghosts ran rampant.

Swordsman Lu Xingzhi escorted a merchant caravan into the Xiangling region. Passing through a valley, he came upon a tribe holding a nighttime sacrifice.

Strings rang out, white figures danced wildly, and mountain spirits howled.

He swung his sword and slew his enemies, only to discover that everyone who fell was a living person.

Rival forces in the martial world used the names of gods and ghosts to fight over spirit jade.

The tribespeople prayed for peace through sacrifice. No true ghosts appeared, but the human heart had already become one.

After that bloody night, weeds overran the valley, and the swordsman’s bones were buried in a mass grave.

Did people commit evil in the name of ghosts, or did ghosts cling to people’s resentment?

No one knew.
