He Forgot to Say Goodbye

That spring, the rain fell day after day. Jiang Xu held an umbrella and wrapped me tightly in his arms.

His chin rested on the top of my head. In a muffled voice, he said, "Wen Lanyin, look. Even Dudu knows to hide in my arms. Why don't you?"

Dudu was the dog we raised together.

At that moment, it was curled up right beside my feet.

I'd only just been pulled out of my solitary world by him. I felt awkward all over, yet the vibration in his chest made my heart itch.

I pushed at him, but couldn't budge him.

I could only mutter softly, "Jiang Xu, you're so annoying."

"I'm only annoying to you."

He lowered his gaze and smiled faintly, my reflection filling his eyes. "I'll be annoying only to you for the rest of my life."

Five years later, it was raining again.

I was holding an umbrella just like the one from back then when I unexpectedly ran into Jiang Xu.

He had his arm around someone else. Even when his gaze swept over me, it was perfectly calm, without a trace of emotion.

I gripped the handle of my umbrella tightly.

Rain dripped from its edge, softly falling, yet hitting my heart like a blow.

I suddenly remembered that years ago, on a rainy day just like this, Jiang Xu had pressed my hand to his chest and smiled like a child who'd gotten candy.

"Wen Lanyin, listen. It's beating for you."

But now, that heartbeat had long since expired.

What a pity.
