Yang Xiaodou was a little country sheep. He diligently cultivated until he could take human form, then marched into the city full of spirit, carrying his whole village's dream of "building roads in the mountains" and looking for work.
But with no ID card, almost every job turned him away.
Unable to find work, Yang Xiaodou could only run errands for powerful demons. They might eat him at any moment, and the pay was pitiful.
Then one day, in the territory of the four-horned sheep demon Tuwu, who loved to tease him, he found a human covered in blood.
As an undocumented resident, Yang Xiaodou was worried that witnessing a death would land him at the police station, so he hurriedly dumped the man at the hospital entrance.
He thought he'd gotten away with it without a trace. But a week later, the human showed up with a stack of contracts Yang Xiaodou couldn't understand and told him to name his terms.
Yang Xiaodou looked at the man's cold, refined features and tugged at the hole in his hem as he spoke in a small voice:
"Three thousand a month, and I want an ID card."

Zhou Jiming was a talented young man, wealthy beyond measure, and occasionally enthusiastic about hunting demons. His life was smooth sailing, until he was accidentally injured while hunting the man-eating sheep demon Tuwu.
As he lay on the brink of death, a round-eyed, round-faced boy saved him, mumbling that he shouldn't be afraid.
Adorable.
Grateful for being saved, Zhou Jiming found the boy and immediately married him, offering himself in return.
But married life wasn't as sweet as he'd imagined.
His wife was away from home every other day, and after finally finding a spouse at thirty, Zhou Jiming missed him so much it made him ill.
At noon, Zhou Jiming met a client at an upscale restaurant and thought the waiter in tails looked like his wife. In the afternoon, he returned a lost little demon to a tour group visiting from the countryside and thought the tour guide with a bumblebee badge looked like his wife. That evening, he took his four-year-old niece to a pet club... and one of the little sheep there looked like his wife too.
On his way home with Tuwu's head in his hand, after successfully defeating the demon, Zhou Jiming happened to come across another demon causing trouble on human turf.
The shop manager being harshly scolded and forced to apologize was none other than the human wife he always spoke to so gently.
Yang Xiaodou, who usually clung to him and called him "hubby," happily came over, but the moment he saw what Zhou Jiming was carrying, he covered his head and turned to run.
In a damp, dark alley, his little wife was trembling with tears on his face. When Zhou Jiming came closer, he hurriedly covered his bottom.
Only then did Zhou Jiming see clearly:
His wife had two small pointed horns and a short, perky tail.
So he was a fluffy little sheep.
Short extra:
After learning Yang Xiaodou's true identity, Zhou Jiming tried every day to coax him into showing his horns and tail.
Thinking about what would happen next made Yang Xiaodou's tail ache, so he refused no matter what.
Zhou Jiming brought out the road-building contract.
Yang Xiaodou: 0.o
Zhou Jiming said calmly, "I also had a school built."
Yang Xiaodou's tail twitched.
Zhou Jiming upped the ante. "And we brought in technology to help with farming."
Yang Xiaodou hurriedly pushed his tail into Zhou Jiming's hands. "Honey, let's dig a little river too."
