Yes, what you described is exactly what happened on X recently (around early March). Elon Musk did forward/reply to a video about fruit fly whole-brain simulation last week (around March 7-8 based on current time), with only one word: Wow. The core content of this post comes from user @oh_that_hat (Hattie Zhou), who shared a milestone demonstration of Eon Systems (or writing @eonsys related projects): • They completely reproduced the Drosophila connectome (whole brain connectome), about 125,000 neurons (you said 125,000). • Directly "insert" this digital brain into a virtual body with a physics engine (based on an embodied simulation environment such as NeuroMechFly v2). • There are no preprogrammed behavioral rules for walking, grooming, turning, eating, etc. • There is no reinforcement learning (RL), imitation learning, supervised training, or reward shaping like the current mainstream AI. • Result: This "digital fruit fly" itself began to exhibit various typical fly behaviors - crawling, stopping to rub its forelimbs, turning, foraging postures... This is indeed the first time that the complete brain connectome of a real creature (rather than a behavioral model) is directly put into a closed-loop sensor-motion simulation, and then a complete behavior emerges. Why are so many people (including Elon) so shocked that they go wild? Because this hits several philosophical + technical pain points: 1. The essential difference between "strong emergence" vs "trained". Offline human brain uploading is one step closer. Drosophila has only 125,000 neurons, while humans have 86 billion to 100 billion, which is a gap of about 6 to 7 orders of magnitude. However, technical bottlenecks such as connectome drawing, simulation, and real-time physical closed-loop are being broken one by one. When the human-level brain is completely scanned + simulated + embodied, does "it" count as the original "you"? The problem suddenly shifted from science fiction to engineering. 3. A stealth slap in the face of the AI roadmap. Most AGI companies (including OpenAI, xAI, etc.) Are following the path of "using massive data + computing power to approach intelligence". This experiment is saying: Perhaps one of the fastest ways is to directly copy the biological brain instead of reinventing the wheel.
