Synopsis

After the campaign against Fang La, Ruan Xiaoqi is appointed commander-in-chief of the Gaitian Army, but can’t find the government offices and is housed in a dilapidated temple outside the city. An imperial edict soon arrives, granting him two bottles of royal wine. But the decree condemns him as a “great bandit of Liangshan” who “wore the dragon robe to flaunt his power,” and orders him to take his own life. After reading it, Ruan Xiaoqi throws back his head and laughs. He strangles the eunuch who delivered the decree, kicks over the poisoned wine, fights his way out, and takes to the run.

With the help of Wu Sanjiao, he obtains the Wu family’s peerless martial arts. After a series of twists and turns, he returns to Shijie Village by Liangshan Marsh. By then, the Jin army has invaded the south. Ruan Xiaoqi and his wife resolutely join Zhang Rong’s resistance forces, becoming the fiercest generals under Zhang Rong’s command.

When the authorities offer Zhang Rong amnesty, Ruan Xiaoqi warns him not to become another Song Jiang. He insists that Zhang Rong keep firm control of the military, helping him achieve the historic victory at Suotou Lake.

Looking for something like The Boss Is Insanely Cunning, and So Is My System. An original premise, a protagonist who isn't an idiot, and no major deal-breakers. The kind you can stay up all night reading.
