Four Autumns of the Xia Family

In the 1960s, Xia Guohua, a teacher at a village elementary school, had four daughters in a row. As they grew up, all four sisters blossomed into beautiful young women. With their different personalities and interests, their lives intertwined and collided, composing a tragic song of women’s fate in that era as they were torn between family and love, ideals and reality.

This work strives to use simple, realistic prose to document in detail the hard lives of ordinary people at the bottom of society during that era. There are no grand heroic deeds or flights of fancy.
