The Woman Who Never Made It Into His Arms

At two in the morning, I woke to the noise my husband, Zhou Shuchong, was making.

Seeing his furrowed brow, I couldn’t help asking, “Why are you back? Did you fight with her?”

He fell silent for a moment, then nodded.

I sat up and gently comforted him. “She’s young and spoiled, so she’s just throwing a little tantrum. Buy her a bag or some jewelry she likes tomorrow, and she’ll be fine.”

He looked at me deeply, but in the end, said nothing.

I lay back down and went right back to sleep, as usual.

It’s been four years. I’ve gone from a jealous wife who flew into hysterics and threatened to kill herself at the slightest thing

into his most understanding confidante and friend.
