Crime-Solving Elite

There’s always one light on until the early hours in the criminal investigation squad’s office. Beneath it sits a man named Lei En, who reads case files like bedtime stories. Ten years ago, he was the least “well-behaved” student at the police academy. He could look at crime scene photos in his criminal psychology class without batting an eye, but he couldn’t stand seeing victims’ families cry. After graduation, he was assigned to the criminal investigation squad. While others avoided cold cases and unsolved cases, he volunteered for them. His colleagues called him “stubborn,” his superiors called him “reckless,” and his mentor said he was “born for this line of work.” Every case recorded in this book really happened in this land: Dismembered remains surfacing in a sewer lead to a tangled murder-for-love mystery spanning ten years; an “accidental death” in a rental apartment in an urban village conceals a suffocating family secret; a chain-reaction crash on an expressway cracks open a human trafficking network spanning three provinces... Lei En never solves cases with a sudden flash of inspiration. He measures the killer’s psychological distance through footprints, reconstructs the moments of a struggle from the shape of bloodstains, and breaks down a suspect’s carefully built defenses with a seemingly casual remark in the interrogation room. Some call him a genius. Only Lei En knows that what people call talent is simply reading three hundred more case files than everyone else, walking three thousand more kilometers of crime scenes, and holding on for one more minute after everyone else has given up. This book is based on real cases. All people involved have been given aliases. There are no superhuman detectives with cheat abilities, only a group of people determined to live up to the uniform they wear. Case files may yellow with age, but the truth never does.
