Undercover: Watching Over the Dawn

The novel tells the epic story of Yu Zecheng, who is ordered to go undercover after 1949. From Guangzhou to Kunming, he maneuvers among agents such as Yan Ming and Zhao Liren, secretly relays information about the city’s defenses, and persuades police chief Cheng Changqing to switch sides. During the bloody October, he witnesses his comrades’ deaths and ultimately helps bring about the successful Kunming Uprising.

After moving to Hong Kong, he becomes caught in an intelligence war among the Communist Party, the Kuomintang, and the Americans. He cleverly uses one enemy to eliminate Lao Han, an internal affairs assassin. Later, in Hainan, he works with the Qiongya Column to thwart the scorched-earth plan and protect the entire city. But after a traitor sells them out, his comrade “Shark” dies a heroic death.

Finally, Yu Zecheng goes undercover in Taiwan. Walking on thin ice under the dual pressures of Wu Jingzhong’s protection and Inspector Qin’s investigation, he chooses to stay and keep fighting, guarding the light alone on this isolated island and completing his ultimate mission undercover.
