The Sage of War Lays Down His Arms

The Art of War has shone through the ages, yet the life of its creator, Sun Wu, lies hidden amid history’s flames. With sweeping prose, this novel lifts the veil from the mysterious Sage of War.

Born into a military family in the state of Qi, Sun Wu dreams of writing the perfect military treatise, one that can “subdue the enemy without fighting.” But civil strife engulfs his homeland, his family is slaughtered, and Duanmu Qing, his childhood sweetheart, is believed to have “died” in the catastrophe. Carrying an unfinished ideal and a shattered heart, he flees to the state of Wu. He steps onto the stage of history with ruthless resolve, drilling the Wu palace guard and executing a consort to assert his authority, then helps King Helu of Wu achieve hegemony.

At the height of his success, fate takes an unexpected turn. Duanmu Qing, now a Yue spy, “returns from the dead,” appearing before him in shackles and with a mission to fulfill. Meanwhile, his close friend Wu Zixu is consumed by hatred. After the capture of Chu’s capital, he exhumes a grave and whips the corpse within, and Sun Wu’s military ideal of “putting an end to war” collapses before the flames of vengeance. On one side is the woman he loves, trapped by forces beyond her control; on the other are a friend growing ever more distant and a king whose suspicions deepen by the day. When Yue’s final assassination order arrives, Sun Wu faces the ultimate test: should he follow the “unorthodox way” of warfare and sacrifice the woman he loves to uphold loyalty and righteousness, or use the wisdom of a lifetime to play a dangerous game that transcends victory and defeat, one that may wager everything? From an infallible sage of military strategy to a reclusive philosopher in the mountains, Sun Wu’s life makes one thing clear: the highest art of war is not winning every battle, but holding fast amid bloodshed and intrigue to a way of “non-contention” more precious than victory. This is an epic of war and peace, political schemes and true affection, killing and redemption. It searches for the real, tormented, and extraordinary soul behind the remarkable book that has influenced the world for thousands of years!
