The Cycle of Fate: One Hundred and Seventy Years in Bianjing

Synopsis of "The Mandate of Heaven: One Hundred and Seventy Years in Bianjing"

In 960 CE, Zhao Kuangyin, the palace commander of Later Zhou, was proclaimed emperor at Chenqiao Station, taking the empire from an orphan and a widowed mother and founding the three-hundred-year dynasty of Great Song. The oath sworn beneath flickering candlelight that night, and the cup of wine that stripped the generals of their military power, became the original sin this dynasty could never escape.

Li Yu, the last ruler of Southern Tang, wrote his final words in blood and tears in Bianjing. He could never have imagined that a hundred and fifty years later, the descendants of Song Taizong Zhao Guangyi, who had destroyed his kingdom and taken his wife, would face a far more brutal revenge. The Emperors Huizong and Qinzong would be taken north and humiliated, their empresses and princesses reduced to servants and concubines, and prosperous Bianjing turned into a city of ghosts. The one who carried out this vengeance was Jin Taizong Wanyan Sheng, who claimed to be Li Yu reborn.

This is not merely the rise and fall of dynasties, but a game of cause and effect spanning centuries. From the Chenqiao Mutiny to the naval battle at Yashan, from the wine banquet that stripped the generals of their power to the injustice at Fengbo Pavilion, the Song rulers’ suspicion of military force, reliance on scholar-officials, and strategic shortsightedness toward their enemies linked together like dominoes, ultimately bringing about the terrible catastrophe of the Jingkang Incident.

With sweeping prose, "The Mandate of Heaven" paints a grand picture of the clashes among Song, Liao, Jin, and Xia. Its vivid psychological portraits explore the fateful choices of historical figures such as Zhao Kuangyin, Li Yu, Yue Fei, and Wanyan Aguda. When the splendor of civilization collides with the iron hooves of barbarism, and personal grudges intertwine with the fate of nations, this epic asks what power costs, how resilient civilization can be, and whether people can break free from the chains of destiny amid the torrent of history.

One hundred and seventy years make a full cycle. The splendor and tears of Bianjing ultimately fade into a sigh from history.
