Southeastern Records

Notes on the Southeast is a three-volume work of historical notes written by an anonymous author during the Yuan Dynasty. It mainly records anecdotes and social customs from the southeastern region during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127–1279). As a collection of historical notes, it differs from official histories: rather than offering a sweeping chronological narrative, it presents a multifaceted, vivid picture of the past through a wealth of concrete details and fragments.

The book covers a remarkably broad range of topics. In politics, it describes the activities of court officials, the implementation of policies, and local governance. In economics, it depicts the prosperous commerce and agriculture of the southeast. Culturally, it touches on local literati, poetry, and cultural exchange. On the social front, it vividly records folk customs, local traditions, and ordinary people’s lives. These accounts not only fill gaps in official histories, but also allow later generations to sense the realities of Southern Song society.

Compared with official histories, Notes on the Southeast uses flexible, vivid language and conveys a strong sense of immediacy and human warmth. It is both a treasure trove of historical materials, offering valuable resources for the study of Southern Song bureaucracy, regional development, and social culture, and an engaging read that lets modern readers feel as though they have traveled back to the southeastern lands to speak with people of the past and experience the pulse of their age.
