Emperor Guangxu

This historical novel focuses on Guangxu, the tragic emperor of the late Qing Dynasty. With a delicate touch, it traces the extraordinary life of Aisin Gioro Zaitian, from a bewildered child brought into the palace, to a ruler striving for reform, to a prisoner confined on Yingtai, and finally to his death with his ambitions unrealized.

In the final years of the Qing Dynasty, the realm was broken and buffeted by storms. Guangxu ascended the throne at the age of six and fell under Cixi’s control from the very start. Throughout his long life as a puppet ruler, he held fast to his dream of making the nation strong. After taking power in his own right, he pushed through opposition to launch the Hundred Days’ Reform, hoping to save the declining Qing through reform. But the backlash from conservative forces brought it to a disastrous end, and he became a prisoner on Yingtai. For more than a decade afterward, he clung to his principles in loneliness and oppression, keeping watch on political developments and witnessing the humiliation of the Russo-Japanese War, the ups and downs of the New Policies, and the faint glimmer of constitutional government. Even as his health steadily failed, he never stopped worrying about his country’s future.

The novel not only recreates Guangxu’s power struggle with Cixi, his deep bond with Consort Zhen, and his shared ideals with the reformers, but also delves into his struggles and helplessness amid the surging tide of history. From the upheaval of the Hundred Days’ Reform to the lonely confinement of his imprisonment on Yingtai, from his resolve in the fading light of the setting sun to his final tragic end.

This is more than a simple biography of an emperor. It is also a portrait of the many lives of late Qing society. It explores the clash between power and ideals, the conflict between reform and reality, and the arduous quest of an emperor constrained by his times. Guangxu’s life was a personal tragedy, but also a microcosm of an entire dynasty. His unfinished dream of reform would become a faint light illuminating the path of modern China’s struggle for survival, inspiring endless reflection and emotion in generations to come.
