Sun Quan, the Blue-Eyed Warlord, and the Jiangdong Empire

In the fifth year of Jian'an, Jiangdong was suddenly left without Sun Ce, and nineteen-year-old Sun Quan took up the seal of the Marquis of Wu. With Zhang Zhao and Zhou Yu at his side, he steadied the situation amid the turmoil. This young man, recorded in history as having “purple whiskers and green eyes,” relied on his extraordinary strategic talent to ally with Liu Bei against Cao Cao at Red Cliffs. A single blaze consumed Cao’s linked warships and laid the foundation for the Three Kingdoms. He crossed the river in white to seize Jingzhou, then used fire at Yiling to drive back Shu’s army, consolidating Jiangdong’s territory with an iron hand. Even after becoming emperor, Sun Quan was no mere ruler content to preserve what he had inherited. He sent Wei Wen on a sea voyage to Yizhou, pioneering maritime expansion; reorganized farming and established the Imperial Academy, helping Jiangnan transform from wilderness into a land of prosperity; and combined military campaigns with appeasement to bring the Shanyue under control, extending Jiangdong’s borders as far as Lingnan. Yet the succession struggles in his later years also revealed the complex humanity beneath his imperial power plays.
