Mingtiao Ridge: The Decisive Battle in Shang Tang's Conquest of Xia

Around 1600 BCE, a pivotal battle that would reshape the course of early Chinese civilization erupted in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River: the Battle of Mingtiao. Tang, leader of the Shang people, commanded an allied force that defeated the main army of Jie of Xia at Mingtiao Ridge, in what is now northwestern Xia County, Shanxi. This brought more than four centuries of Xia rule to an end and ushered in a new era of Shang civilization. The battle was not merely a clash of military forces, but the first enactment of the idea that “the Mandate of Heaven had passed on,” establishing the ideological model and historical logic for dynastic transitions to come.
