The Tale of Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang

Across its sweeping 300 chapters, this book portrays the extraordinary life of Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang (Bumbutai), from her birth on the Horqin grasslands in 1613 to her peaceful death in the Forbidden City in 1688. From a jewel of the grasslands to a secondary consort in Shengjing, she learned the art of survival while keeping a low profile in the imperial harem, witnessing the rise of Later Jin and the founding of the Qing Dynasty. After Hong Taiji's sudden death, she turned the tide amid a maelstrom of power, securing Fulin's succession and Dorgon's regency, and clearing the way for the Qing army to enter the Central Plains. After Shunzhi took power in his own right, she balanced tensions between the Manchu and Han, appeased Mongol tribes, and weathered the Empress's dismissal crisis and the crisis surrounding Dong'e Consort's favor. After Shunzhi's death, she chose Xuanye as his successor and guided the young Kangxi as he captured Oboi, put down the Revolt of the Three Feudatories, recovered Taiwan, and dealt with Russia. Through her wisdom of guiding the government without ruling it, she became a central pillar of stability in the early Qing regime. Grounded in historical sources, the book reveals both Xiaozhuang's resolve and political acumen, as she promoted Manchu-Han integration, prioritized people's livelihoods, and secured the frontiers, and her warmth as a grandmother and a woman, as she taught the emperor, kept the imperial clan united, and governed frugally. From the grasslands to the Central Plains, from a young girl to the Grand Empress Dowager, her life spanned the pivotal transition from chaos to order in the early Qing Dynasty. Her principles of putting the people first and keeping the bigger picture in mind not only laid the foundation for the High Qing era of Kangxi and Qianlong, but also made her an enduring example of wisdom and responsibility among Chinese women, leaving profound lessons for generations to come.
