The Ming Dynasty: Even My Son Is in League with the Japanese

During the Jiajing reign, Japanese pirates ravaged the southeast. A secret memorial exposed Prince Jing’s shocking plot to collude with them and seize the throne, plunging the court into a bloody storm. Yan Song’s faction and Prince Yu’s supporters used the case to attack each other. Hai Rui investigated corruption with unbending resolve, Qi Jiguang fought the pirates on blood-soaked battlefields, and Wang Zhi stirred up trouble on both sides of the law. The Jiajing Emperor stayed behind the scenes, keeping all sides in check as a deadly struggle played out on the battlefield and at court.

After Prince Jing was executed and Yan Song’s faction fell, Prince Yu took the throne and launched the Longqing reforms, lifting the maritime bans and strengthening the frontier defenses. Xu Jie and Zhang Juzheng successively took power and deepened the reforms, but neither could escape the whirlpool of factional strife. Hai Rui punished corrupt officials, while Qi Jiguang secured the borders. Just as the Ming dynasty’s strength was growing, the Wanli Emperor’s neglect of state affairs and the eunuchs’ growing power pushed the dynasty to the brink of crisis.

With factional strife raging at home and foreign powers eyeing the empire from abroad, the court struggled to hold the country together through the reigns from Taichang to Chongzhen. The Chongzhen Emperor worked tirelessly to govern, rooting out abuses and consolidating military strength. Against all odds, he fought internal rebellions and repelled foreign enemies, turning the tide. After enduring political intrigue and the ravages of war, the Great Ming found new life amid the storm and continued its legend of prosperity.
