The Rising Tide II

Synopsis of Silent Undercurrents

In 1940, in Fengtian. Doctor Lin Mo and nurse Shen Zhiwei cross paths because of a mysterious phoenix-shaped birthmark, unaware that each is hiding a very different identity: he is “Night Owl,” an agent of the Military Statistics Bureau, and she is “Baizhi,” an underground Communist Party member.

A marriage of convenience binds them together in a dangerous world of espionage. From a hidden hospital room to the hell of Unit 731, from tracking someone through a snowy night to standing beneath cherry blossoms, they discover that the Japanese collaborator official Tan Zhengnan is connected to a vast network of infiltrators codenamed “Shadow Warrior,” and that the disappearance of “Phoenix” has also uncovered a decades-old history of national hatred and family vengeance.

Tempered by trust and betrayal, and caught between personal feelings and the greater good of the nation, they go from testing one another to entrusting each other with their lives, maneuvering together through attacks from Japanese collaborators, the Military Statistics Bureau, and underground organizations. When the final truth emerges amid sacrifice and awakening, evidence of crimes shocking enough to shake the world forces opposing factions to sit down and consider a common path.

This is the story of two young people searching for light in the darkest of times. Amid silent undercurrents, they use scalpels, radios, lies, and true affection to win a glimmer of dawn for their shattered land. And long after the war ends, a faded button in an iron box and a promise left unfulfilled still await an answer in the depths of time…

Beneath the smoke of war, only faith and love cannot be disguised.
