The Beggar I Took In Turned Out to Be a Hidden Big Shot

In a single night, I fell from the heights into the dirt.

My family went bankrupt, and my father died under a cloud of false accusations. I went from the cherished heiress of the Lin family to a low-level office worker anyone could bully. On the rainiest, most wretched night of my life, the fiancé who had abandoned me at our engagement ceremony was sneering at me with his new lover in his arms.

On an impulse of kindness, I took in a battered “beggar” I found beside a trash heap.

He had lost his memory and fallen on hard times, with nothing but a pair of deep, wary eyes like a wolf’s. To fend off the endless harassment, I signed a contract with him: “We’ll get married. I’ll give you a home, and you’ll help me save face.”

And so the husband I’d picked up for next to nothing became my sharpest “shield.” He stood up to my awful relatives, tore into my cheating ex and his mistress, and protected me with a ferocity that knew no bounds.

I thought it was a deal that suited us both, until one day a fleet of cars belonging to a top international conglomerate blocked the entrance to my run-down alley. The bodyguards in black bowed in unison and called out to him, “Welcome back, Mr. Gu!”

That was when I realized the man I’d picked up on a whim wasn’t a stray dog. He was a sleeping lion.

And when his memories returned and he reclaimed everything that was his, he coolly handed me divorce papers. That was when I realized I was already in too deep...

Later, at the height of an international economic summit, he pulled me into his arms in front of the world’s media. His voice was hoarse but reverent. “Wanwan, I built my empire for you. The moment you found me was the beginning of a lifetime of good fortune.”
