The Warmth of a Mechanical Heart

In 2347, the neon lights of Xinhai City pierce the smog that never lifts, casting colorful reflections across the rain-soaked streets. Hovercars roar past, their slipstreams stirring the slogans on electronic billboards at the street corners: “The perfect companion robot, to cure your loneliness.” The cold, mechanical voice loops above the city, but does nothing to dispel the alienation of its concrete-and-steel jungle.

Su Wan sits at the workbench in the Stardust Repair Shop, a miniature welding gun held between her fingers. Blue arcs flicker before her eyes. At the center of the workbench lies a half-disassembled companion robot, a Qiming-7, a model discontinued three years ago. Its metal casing is covered in scratches, and the energy core in its chest gives off a faint red glow, like a heart about to stop beating.

“The power circuits are badly oxidized, and the neural transmission chip is burned out.” Su Wan’s voice is gentle but tired. She pushes up her old-fashioned optical glasses, their lenses reflecting the welding gun’s blue light. “Old Chen, this one can’t be fixed. Its core components are all worn out. We might as well scrap it.”
