A Simple Commentary on the Fahua Wenzhu

The ten-fascicle Fahua Wenju, or Words and Phrases of the Lotus Sutra, was expounded by Master Zhiyi of the Sui dynasty and recorded by the Venerable Zhang'an. It is a model for exegesis in the Tiantai school. Through four approaches to interpreting the text, namely causes and conditions, doctrinal classification, the original and the manifested, and contemplation of the mind, it unlocks the full body of the Tathagata's teachings and reveals the Lotus Sutra's perfect and sudden meaning: opening the provisional to reveal the real and bringing the three vehicles together as one. This accessible commentary follows a hundred-part outline, synthesizes the five periods and eight teachings, and brings them together in the three contemplations of one mind. Its aim is to help readers understand the text, enter into contemplative practice, and ultimately reach the Buddha's knowledge and vision. Throughout, it adheres to Tiantai methods: the three principles for expounding the sutras, the four modes of benefiting beings, the six stages of realization, and the ten vehicles of contemplation. In this way, the profound meaning of the Perfect Teaching shines as clearly as the sun and stars, and the essentials of actual practice stand plainly before our eyes.
