A Simple Commentary on the Record of the Mirror of the Source

The Zongjing Lu is a monumental work compiled by Chan Master Yongming Yanshou (904–975) of the Later Zhou, gathering the essential teachings of the Chan and doctrinal schools. Its guiding principle is, “Take the One Mind as the source, and illuminate the myriad dharmas like a mirror.” Across one hundred volumes, it encompasses the heart of the Tripitaka and the twelve divisions of scripture. This accessible commentary follows the principles of “interpreting treatises through the sutras and verifying sutras through the treatises,” bringing together the complete, sudden teachings of Huayan and the direct pointing of Chan, and explaining the mind’s timeless essence in modern language. Each volume is divided into chapters that clarify the meaning, following the format of “general outline, detailed explanation, and corroboration.” Comparisons between sutras and treatises, along with explanations of koans, help readers grasp the overall framework while delving into the details and practical application. It is truly a guide to entering the depths of the Zongjing Lu.
