A Simple Commentary on the Blue Cliff Record

An Accessible Commentary on the Blue Cliff Record is a modern interpretation of the Chan Buddhist classic, the Blue Cliff Record. Compiled by Chan Master Yuanwu Keqin, the original work contains one hundred koans and brings together the Linji school's distinctive style. Through forms such as commentary, instruction, and interlinear notes, it reveals Chan's incisive methods and the profound essence of its teachings. Guided by the principle of “mind seals mind,” this accessible commentary explains the background and essence of each koan, along with the wisdom of the patriarchs, in everyday language. Historical anecdotes and practical guidance for cultivation are also included to help readers break through fixed views and investigate the source directly. The book emphasizes bringing Chan practice into daily life, weaving profound teachings into the ordinary and offering modern students a convenient path to clarity of mind and realization of their true nature. Through this commentary, readers can glimpse Chan's lively spirit of “not relying on words and a special transmission outside the teachings,” and come to know the perfect state of their inherently pure nature.
