A Simple Commentary on the Samyukta Agama Sutra

The Samyukta Agama is a foundational scripture of early Buddhism and one of the four Agamas transmitted in the Northern Buddhist tradition. It is revered as “the foremost of Buddhist scriptures.” Its central teachings, including the five aggregates, the six sense bases, dependent origination, the Four Noble Truths, and the Noble Eightfold Path, form its framework. The text faithfully records how the Buddha taught in response to the needs of his listeners. Spanning fifty fascicles and containing 1,359 discourses, it presents a kaleidoscope of dialogues between the Buddha and his disciples, kings, Brahmins, non-Buddhist practitioners, and ordinary people. Profound and wide-ranging, it is an essential path to the Buddha's true Dharma. This accessible commentary uses the original translation by Gunabhadra of the Liu Song dynasty (CBETA T099) as its basis and follows the principle of being faithful, clear, and elegant. Each fascicle is systematically explained in two chapters. Each chapter contains an [Introduction] to establish the theoretical framework, the [Original Sutra Text] faithfully reproduced from the canonical edition, an [Accessible Explanation] that analyzes the Dharma's meaning in layers, [Essential Insights from the Patriarchs] gathering the finest points from Chinese and Indian commentaries, and a [Chapter Summary] distilling the core ideas.
