A Brief Commentary on the Huayan Sutra with Commentary and Annotations

A Simplified Commentary on the Huayan Sutra Commentary and Subcommentary is a modern annotated edition that systematically explains the Tang dynasty master Chengguan's Commentary and Subcommentary on the Huayan Sutra. Chengguan's eighty-volume work is the definitive achievement of the Huayan school, integrating the sutra's meaning and offering profound insights into contemplation and practice. Yet its language and meaning are so profound and expansive that modern readers often feel overwhelmed when studying it. Following the principles of "explaining the ancients through the ancients, and explaining the sutras through the sutras," this book adheres strictly to Chengguan's original intent as it analyzes the text chapter by chapter and sentence by sentence, highlighting its central ideas. Through three approaches, "structural mapping," "unfolding the principles," and "guidance in contemplative practice," it transforms the profound language of the commentary into a practical guide for modern students. Each volume is divided into three to five chapters, and every chapter contains three main sections: "Chapter Essentials," "Explaining the Original Text," and "Key Points for Contemplating the Mind." Scriptural evidence, case studies, diagrams, and outlines supplement the text, helping readers progress step by step and glimpse the depths of Huayan's sea of true nature.
