A Feast in Yong'an: The Warmth of Everyday Life

An unexpected relocation brings Shen Shaoguang and her family away from their homeland and, through a twist of fate, to Yong’an City, a bustling place with a lively, down-to-earth charm. The newly arrived Shen family faces the challenge of making ends meet, so Shen Shaoguang, an accomplished cook, decides to put her skills to use by opening a small restaurant in a corner of the busy market. Her cooking may lack the exquisite luxury of imperial cuisine, but it has the warmth of a home-cooked meal. Whether it’s a steaming bowl of spicy pepper soup or a crisp, delicious youxuan pastry, every dish is infused with her love of life and devotion to flavor. The little, nameless eatery soon draws the neighbors with its distinctive fare, and unexpectedly catches the eye of Lin Yan, Junior Prefect of the Capital.

Lin Yan is a local official in Yong’an City, spending his days juggling court affairs and disputes among the common folk. He is accustomed to the rigid conventions and coldness of officialdom. During an incognito inspection, he is drawn in by the aroma wafting from the little restaurant. Once inside, he is moved not only by Shen Shaoguang’s cooking, but also by her optimistic resilience and her refusal to be cowed. At first, their connection begins with food. Lin Yan often visits as a customer, chatting about everything from whether a dish needs more salt to the lives of ordinary people, and from choosing ingredients to the good and evil in people’s hearts. Through Lin Yan, Shen Shaoguang gradually learns about the complex realities beneath Yong’an City’s polished surface. She also discovers that this seemingly stern junior prefect cares deeply for the people and quietly works hard to protect the peace of the region. A stir over food is quietly brewing.
