Mulan Slays the Invaders

TV drama The Ballad of Mulan, Episode One: Trouble at Yanmen, Disguised as a Man Scene One: The Hua Family Courtyard · Morning Morning light filtered through the sparse leaves of the locust trees, casting dappled shadows across the flagstones. Wisps of smoke drifted from the kitchen chimney, spreading the fragrant smell of rice porridge through the courtyard. Hua Mulan (played by Young Master Xuan) crouched by the well, gripping the rope of a wooden bucket with both hands as she hauled up a full load of water. With a twist of her wrist, clear water poured from a wooden dipper into the earthenware vat in the corner of the courtyard, splashing in tiny droplets. “Mulan, take it slow. Don’t wear yourself out.” Hua’s father emerged from the main house, leaning on a jujube-wood cane. Thick bandages wrapped his left knee, an old injury from his military service years ago that throbbed painfully whenever it rained. Hua Mulan straightened and wiped the light sweat from her brow with her sleeve. Smiling, she looked back. “This is nothing, Father. Go sit inside. The porridge will be ready soon.” She turned and went into the kitchen, lifted the lid of the earthenware pot, and stirred the rice porridge with a wooden spoon. Through the rising steam, her features looked bright and clear, with the spirited air of a young man, though a trace of feminine softness lingered around her eyes and brows. Suddenly, a rush of hurried hoofbeats sounded outside the courtyard gate, growing louder as it approached. The chickens in the corner flapped about in alarm. Hua Mulan paused with the wooden spoon in her hand and peered outside. Two constables in brown uniforms had stopped their horses at the village entrance, each holding up a scroll of bright yellow paper
