Lord Guan, Righteous and Mighty

A Comprehensive Introduction to Lord Guan, the Righteous and Loyal

The Heart of the Story

Set against the backdrop of the defense of Jingzhou during the Three Kingdoms period, the story focuses on the strategic contest and choices of loyalty faced by Guan Yu, the "Warrior Saint," as he confronts an estrangement plot devised by Eastern Wu. Breaking away from the traditional portrayal of a "God of War," the story unfolds through three central plot points: a coded message hidden in the River-Splitting Saber, a half-piece of bamboo slip that reveals true intentions, and a counterattack using a deliberately misplaced defense map. It shows that Guan Yu is not only a valiant warrior on the battlefield, but also clear-sighted in judging people and seeing through schemes. It deepens the meaning of "loyalty and righteousness" beyond simple allegiance, showing trust between brothers and mastery of the situation.

The Story

Under the setting sun on the walls of Jingzhou, an envoy from Eastern Wu arrives bearing the River-Splitting Saber. The bamboo slip hidden in its gift box and the marks on its scabbard are part of an estrangement trap Lu Meng has laid for Guan Yu's deputy, Zhou Cang. Guan Yu sees through the code but keeps his composure, gifting the saber to Zhou Cang while actually offering him a chance to prove himself. In the military tent late at night, he confronts Zhou Cang with the other half of the bamboo slip. Rather than holding him accountable, he joins forces with him to set a trap: Zhou Cang will pretend to defect with a fake defense map, luring Lu Meng's ambush troops into a canyon. From his restraint when accepting the saber at the city wall, to the trust he places in Zhou Cang beneath the tent's candlelight, and finally their counterplot and deadly reprisal, every step intertwines loyalty with strategy. They not only defend the gates of Jingzhou, but also preserve the brotherly bond they have shared for three years.
