Thunder over Hebei

In the seventh year of Jian'an, Yuan Shao, the dominant power in Hebei, died of illness. His death struck the northern horizon like a clap of thunder. The once-mighty clan was instantly thrown into a struggle between the brothers Yuan Tan and Yuan Shang. Ambition and suspicion displaced their father's authority, and the flames of infighting erupted before any outside enemy could strike. The warlord Cao Cao keenly sensed the opportunity hidden in that thunderclap. He used mediation as a pretext, while in truth he set out to annex Yuan territory. His armies crossed the Yellow River and marched north, wielding both strategy and an iron fist. The “relief” at Liyang, the siege of Ye City, the desperate breakout by the Yi River... Cao Cao skillfully turned the Yuan family's internal divisions to his advantage, advancing one step at a time. With one brother captured and the other fleeing, the heart of Hebei fell into Cao Cao's grasp. His gaze had already passed beyond the Great Wall and turned toward the lands beyond the frontier. The battle at White Wolf Mountain struck with thunderous force, eliminating the Yuan remnants and ending the Wuhuan threat once and for all. This was a conquest that began with a thunderclap and ended with a storm. See how Cao Cao seized his opportunity and turned a tragedy of brothers at war into the foundation for unifying the north.
