The Sunflower That Would Not Bend

The story begins in the tender, beautiful days of youth at school. Lin Miaomiao and Qian Sanyi, once desk mates in the experimental class at an elite high school and now a couple who made their way together to Tsinghua University, seemed like a match made in heaven to everyone around them. Yet beneath Qian Sanyi’s distinguished family background and outstanding abilities lay deep-seated suspicions and possessiveness. His suffocating love finally shattered after a heated argument: he slammed the door and left, while she, heartbroken, quietly disappeared, as if she had never been part of his world. Eight months later, in a Paris hospital delivery room, all the pain, struggle, and new beginnings were distilled into a series of desperate cries. Alone, Lin Miaomiao endured searing contractions as she said her final goodbye to the past. At the edge of consciousness, her resentment toward Qian Sanyi, her longing for her mother, and the pull of their sweet memories all became the courage that kept her going. Crying, “I can’t go on… but I have to live! The baby has to live, too!” she not only welcomed her twin daughters, Lele and Youyou, into the world, but also completed a profound rebirth of her own. The once bright and cheerful girl endured immense changes to both body and mind all alone in a foreign land, transforming into a resilient, independent mother and fashion designer. When she finally reappears in Qian Sanyi’s world, radiant in a whole new way and carrying the secret of their two daughters, an unpredictable storm awaits them. Through the story of these lovers, the novel explores love and hurt, possession and letting go, dependence and growth.
