A Simple Commentary on the Tao Te Ching

The Tao Te Ching, also known as the Laozi, was written by Laozi, the great thinker and philosopher of the pre-Qin era. It is a treasure of ancient Chinese philosophy, political thought, and cosmology, as well as the foundational work of Taoist thought. Though only a little over five thousand characters long, it encompasses countless ideas and profound meanings, and is considered a source of wisdom for Chinese civilization. The book is divided into the Tao section (the first part, chapters one through thirty-seven) and the Virtue section (the second part, chapters thirty-eight through eighty-one), for a total of eighty-one chapters. This accessible commentary aims to explain the Tao Te Ching's profound meaning in a respectful, rigorous, and easy-to-understand way. It follows these principles: 1. Investigating the original: The text will be carefully collated against authoritative versions, such as the Wang Bi edition, the Mawangdui silk manuscripts, and the Guodian bamboo slips, in an effort to remain faithful to Laozi's original meaning. 2. A layered analysis: Following the format of Buddhist scriptural commentaries, each chapter's accessible explanation will include a title and an introduction, followed by a detailed, line-by-line and even character-by-character interpretation of the original text and its philosophical meaning. The discussion will also draw on historical context, philosophical systems, guidance for self-cultivation, and strategies for governing the state. 3. Bridging past and present: While respecting the classics' original meaning, the commentary will connect them with modern concerns such as management, life, ecology, and psychology, revealing their enduring relevance. 4. Bringing ideas together: At key points, it will cite incisive insights from important commentators throughout history, such as Heshang Gong, Wang Bi, Hanshan Deqing, and Wei Yuan, to broaden readers' perspectives and deepen their understanding. 5. Style: The prose will be smooth and graceful, balancing academic rigor with accessibility. It will make profound, abstruse principles clear and tangible, and guide readers
