Love on the Airwaves

Shanghai, 1937. Su Qingyuan, a radio host recently returned from studying abroad, shares warmth over the airwaves every day, never realizing that her voice has become the underground operative Lu Shiyan's “lifeline.” He can decipher vital intelligence from the faintest bits of static after her time checks.

After an unexpected encounter exposes Lu Shiyan's secret, the two are forced to work together: she uses the broadcast studio as cover, while he sends messages of faith over the airwaves. Amid the flames of war, the late-night radio frequency becomes their only connection. “It'll rain tonight. Remember to dress warmly” is both an everyday reminder and a secret signal between life and death.

As the fighting draws near and the Japanese army puts the radio station under surveillance, they must choose between their duty to their country and their love for each other. In her final broadcast, Su Qingyuan softly sings the song they heard when they first met, while Lu Shiyan grips his gun on the other end of the airwaves. “Wait for me. We'll go listen to a clear sky without static.”
