The Cangzhou Testament

In the thirteenth year of Jian'an, Cao Cao leads his forces south. Lin Yanzhi, a member of Jingzhou’s gentry, refuses to serve Liu Bei and flees by sea with his three wives, six children, and more than twenty servants. A typhoon sweeps them to Cangzhou, an uninhabited island in the East China Sea. On this lonely island, where survival is a daily struggle, the Central Plains tradition of farming and scholarship collides with the harsh reality of living off the sea. Lin Yanzhi insists on uniting everyone through family precepts. His primary wife, Su Wan, upholds the rites; his secondary wife, Liu Niang, prioritizes survival; and his other secondary wife, Qin Zheng, passes on the refined arts. Their six children each choose their own path, whether steadfast, rebellious, or conciliatory. From quarrels over morning reading to surviving a typhoon, from pirate attacks to carving their culture into stone walls, the Lin family learns to adapt and grow together in desperate circumstances. In the end, they forge the rites of the Central Plains and the wisdom of the islands into the Cangzhou family precepts: “Farm the sea and honor Heaven; balance strength with gentleness.” Thus, a family’s flame, tossed about by the chaos of a troubled age, takes root and flourishes.
