Willows Behind the Palace Walls: A Snowbound Knot of Hearts

Winter snow blankets the palace walls of the Great Yin dynasty. Yun Zhi, a daughter of the Yun family’s concubine branch, enters the palace as a pawn, only to become entangled in Emperor Xiao Yan’s love and schemes. He is a ruler burdened by the wrongful death of his mother; she is a spy planted by her family. When they first meet, palace lanterns illuminate his dragon robe, and his words, “A lovely face,” bind them together in a decade-old case and a vast empire. An attack at Taiye Lake, an arrow shielded during the spring hunt, and the shock of a secret decree: he carefully eliminates the late emperor’s hidden pieces while she struggles between her family’s mission and her true feelings. From ink-grinding maid at Chenyigong to empress wielding the phoenix seal, from taking an arrow for him on the Lingnan battlefield to sharing life and death with him on the northern frontier, they unravel the mystery of their swapped identities and burn the evidence of Prince Jing’an’s crimes, binding their true love with a knot of unity amid a sea of blood and vengeance. Xiao Yan tears his robe to defy his ministers and protect her; she burns a letter written in blood and hides her birthmark for his sake. The schemes within the palace walls, the fighting on the battlefield, and the great clans’ counterattacks all eventually fade beneath falling snow in the plum grove, leaving only a few words in the history books: “Her origins remain a mystery; a lifetime of peace.” Only the knot of unity they have kept for ten years remembers their first meeting beneath the palace willows, their vow in the flames of war to “live and die together,” and how the emperor and his empress found in each other the one person with whom they could live a peaceful life amid power struggles, love, and hatred.
