Clear Skies at Twelve, Rain at Thirty

When Chi Mo was twelve, he secretly tucked Shu Ran’s pigtails and smiling eyes into a sunlit corner of his memory. A decade later, in the wake of a typhoon and amid raging, muddy waves, he saw her, dressed in a white coat, rescuing people beneath a makeshift shelter. The moment a billboard came crashing down, he shielded her faster than his heart could beat. Some feelings, it turned out, could grow into instinct over time. She had only just escaped the mire of betrayal when he came into her life as a rescuer. From watching over her at a temporary medical station in Huacheng to bringing her hot soup at their neighboring apartments in Shenshi, he used his quiet tenderness to dry her rain-soaked past, little by little. The longing he had kept hidden through the years finally became an unspoken understanding beside her mother’s hospital bed. When her white coat stood beside his work jacket in the morning light of Meishi, and the children’s laughter filled the courtyard, they realized that storm had never been a footnote to disaster. Fate had parted the clouds so he could finally plant the sunshine he’d kept from his youth, and grow it into a lifetime of clear skies for them both.
