A Love Song from the Heart: Love Begins with a Chance Encounter

During the National Day holiday, Ye Qinglan returns to a mountain town in Puxian County, Meishi, to spend time with her parents. Since childhood, she has been doted on by her mother’s family. After graduating from college, she took a job at a chain kindergarten in Hucheng, Guancheng. This is her fourth year there, and thanks to her outstanding performance, she has been promoted ahead of schedule to assistant director. Her older sister, Ye Mucheng, works at a primary school in their home county, while her brother-in-law, Che Taoyi, is the head of a police station in a neighboring town. They drive over to pick her up and take her to a gathering with several of her brother-in-law’s high school buddies. When they arrive at a private room in MG Bar, Ye Qinglan recognizes three or four of the men as senior students from her middle school: Lin Hongkai, Li Wenze, Zhang Mengting, Lai Jianwen, and others. But there is also a handsome, bespectacled man she doesn’t recognize, with a scholarly air about him. Her brother-in-law introduces him as Li Jingyuan. Li Jingyuan comes from an illustrious family and works for the judicial department in Hucheng, Guancheng. The moment Ye Qinglan opens the private-room door, he is captivated by her youthful beauty and lively, cheerful personality. All evening, he quietly watches her interact with the others, laughing and joking with them and playing dice. After the gathering, he asks his friend Che Taoyi, Ye Qinglan’s brother-in-law, for her phone number and WeChat, then adds her without sending her a message. Once the National Day holiday ends, everyone returns to their respective cities and jobs. For Ye Qinglan, the gathering is barely memorable, just a passing episode. Several months later, on Christmas, she goes to Star Party KTV with a few close coworkers. When she runs into Li Jingyuan, she doesn’t recognize him, but he recognizes her. From then on, he sets out to win his sweet little wife’s heart.
