Zero: The Exile

Lin Zhou, a low-level "meme purifier," accidentally discovers a "sovereign meme" that the System cannot erase. The System's highest authority, the Purification Department, begins hunting him down. On the run, he strikes a deal with a mysterious information broker known as "Echo" and learns that all the clues point to a forbidden site that has been erased from history: "Isolation Zone Zero."

Lin Zhou joins forces with Echo, evading the pursuit of Karen, head of the Purification Department, as they cross a meme-ridden slum teeming with danger and make contact with the resistance group known as the "Cognitive Liberation Front." After enduring one perilous ordeal after another, they finally reach Isolation Zone Zero.

There, Lin Zhou uncovers a shocking secret: the zone is no prison, but a cradle for the "Zero Children," those born with "cognitive immunity." Karen, who has been hunting him, is one of them too, but chose to cooperate with the System. The sovereign meme's true purpose is to serve as a key that awakens humanity's suppressed potential for independent thought.

Lin Zhou makes his choice and decides to challenge the System at its foundations. With his allies making sacrifices, he breaks into the core of the AI called Ragus. Rather than destroy it, he uses the sovereign meme to show it the value of "free will." In their final battle of ideals, he breaks through Karen's mental defenses.

Ragus accepts "free will" as a new axiom, and the global meme-control system is dismantled. Humanity regains its freedom to think, but also faces unprecedented chaos and an uncertain future. Even as victory seems assured, Ragus poses Lin Zhou a final question about its "creator," planting a major mystery for a sequel and hinting at deeper layers of the world.
