Lin Siyan's War of Style

Lin Siyan is a data analyst and a practical-minded city woman who believes in “value for money” and “logic above all.” She married for love, and also “married into” a family with an ultra-luxury, high-end mother-in-law: Madam Su Wanqin.

Madam Su won’t cook with ordinary water. It has to come from a designated source in the Alps. She won’t sleep on ordinary sheets, either, accepting only Egyptian long-staple cotton woven by hand. She considers instant coffee “industrial wastewater,” and insists that her pour-over beans come from a single estate in Gesha Village. When this “artist of living,” refined down to the very tips of her hair, descends on the home Lin Siyan shares with her husband, Gu Jiaming, under the banner of “rescuing you from your crude lifestyle,” a war over “taste” begins.

From the angle of the toilet to the music played for prenatal education, from the fabric of the couple’s pajamas to the family’s financial plans, Lin Siyan’s logical world is bombarded by her mother-in-law’s “fake refinement.” Her husband, Gu Jiaming, becomes the most beleaguered human sandwich in history, constantly torn between his mother’s “artistic influence” and his wife’s clear-eyed practicality.
