The two great families of the Imperial Capital are the Ni family and the He family. Ni Nian, the heroine, has had a secret crush on the hero, He Fusheng, since childhood. He Fusheng, however, likes Su Xiang, whose family is of modest means. When Ni Nian finds out, she gradually distances herself from him. Bound by their families' arranged marriage, He Fusheng marries Ni Nian, but doesn't love her. Ni Nian and He Fusheng sign a marriage agreement, and she helps him date Su Xiang. Their families need an heir to strengthen their business alliance, so under pressure, the two share a bed. In the course of their daily life, He Fusheng falls in love with Ni Nian, but she remains cold toward him and only wants to give birth to an heir as quickly as possible before leaving. But things don't go as planned: Ni Nian has a girl with her first pregnancy, another girl with her second, and a third girl with her third. After three daughters in a row, her desire to leave doesn't seem quite so strong anymore.
