My Whole Clan Helps Me Pass the City God Exam

Cui Yan was dead, but not entirely. He had just transmigrated into the body of a sickly scholar from a poor family. The clan's hopes had barely been kindled before they were about to go out. His resources were snatched away, cold stares cut like knives, and even his only “comparison” cousin was waiting to step on him and climb higher. His mother lived on wild-vegetable cakes to support him, her humble hopes pricking at his heart like needles. What was this, ancient times? It was clearly the Plus version of hell for a small-town exam grinder! Just as he thought he could do nothing but lie there and rot, whap! A notice for an underworld “recruitment exam” smacked him in the face: In three days, sit the City God exam and become a judge! The civil service exam route in the land of the living is closed? The underworld government hiring channel is now open for you! In the examination hall, Cui Yan's brush flew across the page as he judged the living and dead, deciding the fates of souls and meting out rewards and punishments to ghosts! All the talent and fury he'd been bottling up for half his life poured out! Better still, the underworld “salary”, merit entering his body, actually revived his broken-down body like dead wood budding in spring! His clan members were stunned: Yesterday the sickly young man had seemed on the verge of death, but today his complexion was rosy. And their attitude? What did that even mean? His great-uncle's gaze shifted from pity to calculation, then to fervor. His face changed faster than the pages of a book! The sycophancy of the fence-sitters, his cousin's strained smile... Watching them put on this whole show of changing faces just because he'd gotten a little better, Cui Yan sneered inwardly: Can't handle even this? Watch as he uses his “Ninth-Rank Underworld Salary” to nourish his soul and restore his body, while wielding the authority of a “Probationary Judge” to handle minor cases between the living and dead, doing good deeds and accumulating merit! All the resources will be mine, and at last my mother will hold her head high! The whole clan will support me? That's not all! I want the entire clan looking to me for their livelihood, and I'll raise them all to glory alongside me! Being an official in the underworld is damn well worth it! Do good deeds in the living world, get promoted and earn a raise in the underworld? Cui Yan's path to merit has only just begun to shine with golden light!
