Shadows of Espionage in the Fog City

On the eve of Wuhan’s fall in 1938, Communist underground agent Chen Lin, code-named “Qingsong,” undertakes a perilous mission: posing as a Military Statistics Bureau special commissioner, he infiltrates the heart of a Kuomintang intelligence agency. Tasked with obtaining the Kuomintang’s anti-Communist plans and intelligence on the Japanese army, he draws on his expertise in cryptography and his training as an agent to face identity checks and codebreaking tests with composure, gradually earning the trust of department head Xu Enzeng. The story evokes the chaos of the docks and the grim atmosphere of the intelligence agency, highlighting the danger of the protagonist’s life on a knife’s edge. It lays the groundwork for his later dealings with Dai Li, the head of the secret service, and portrays both the brutality of covert operations and the unwavering faith of an underground agent.
