Bones Tell the Tales of the Tang Dynasty

On a moonlit night in the flourishing Tang Dynasty, the purplish lividity on a decomposing corpse’s wrist kindles an eerie flame in the eyes of Pei Wange, a forensic pathologist who has transmigrated.

A touch of white bone lets her glimpse the dead person’s final moments, but she nearly drowns in the memories of a drowned servant boy.

An examination of skeletal remains lets her reconstruct the course of a poisoning, yet the sword of the Court of Judicial Review’s junior minister presses against her throat. “A woman who enters the death cells without permission deserves eighty strokes.”

In her left hand is the Wrongful Convictions System, where she can redeem works such as the Treatise on Poisons and the Bone Appraisal Manual. In her right is a jade hairpin, beginning to crack because she has been disguising herself as a man. It is a keepsake from her father, Pei Ji, and also the key that tore open space and time when she transmigrated.

A candidate collapses dead in the examination hall; a secret poison from a former dynasty is hidden inside the inkstick.

A princess’s consort falls from his horse at her secluded villa; half a golden hairpin is embedded in the horse’s bones.

Deep in the ruins of the Eastern Palace, the Crown Prince’s skeleton lets out a silent scream in the torrential rain...

When Pei Wange conjures a vision of the Crown Prince being poisoned before the Qianyuan Hall, the mastermind claps and laughs.

“If your honored father hadn’t misidentified the former Crown Prince’s remains twenty years ago, we wouldn’t have this splendid show today.”

White bones weep blood; the jade hairpin cries out against injustice.

Beneath the dazzling splendor of this age, she will use modern forensic science to break through a thousand-year-old wall of criminal justice, and speak for the dead and claim rights for the living, between the memories held in bones and the truth of history.
