The Twin Habitats Pendant: Power and Favor Across the Realm

On the Lantern Festival night, impoverished scholar Xiao Chengyu and merchant’s daughter Tang Wanwan meet over the painting Twin Cranes. The two halves of the phoenix-and-luan jade pendants they each wear align like stars, revealing a bond written in destiny. Xiao Chengyu gets caught up in an old imperial examination fraud case, while Tang Wanwan becomes the focus of a struggle within the Tianji Pavilion because of the jade pendant her mother left her. The powerful minister Yang Mingyuan drives them into a corner: he secretly forges weapons and monopolizes the salt trade, hoping to use the stars to justify a rebellion.

One can paint with a brush and wield a sword to protect the people; the other can calculate with an abacus and turn the tide with silver needles. From the flutter of their first meeting at a street-side painting stall to fighting back-to-back against their enemies, he breaks into the Ministry of Revenue at night to gather evidence, while she devises a clever plan to break the monopoly with “People’s Salt.” When the pendants are joined, they reveal the prophecy “Two phoenixes on one branch,” and expose the bloody debts owed to two generations of loyal officials. As business acumen and remonstrations at court intertwine, they take love as their armor and stand side by side to outwit the schemes swirling around them. The Twin Cranes spread their wings not because fate decrees it, but so they can protect the people and each other while holding hands.

See how this couple, unmatched with brush and sword, writes a legend of “sharing the world together” amid the turbulent currents of power.
